Matthew helped out driving to our next destination and gave me a much needed break. Our seventh stop was at Little Elden Springs Horse Camp, part of the Coconino National Forest, just north of Flagstaff, Arizona. We stayed here for one day and two nights.
These sites were primitive (no water or electric hook up) but we did have water for the horses and pit toilets.
We carried scrap lumber firewood with us the entire trip and this was the only place that we ended up having a fire. Matthew cooked two dinners and one breakfast over the flames.
Mow's feet were feeling a little better at this point so we were able to do a short 6 mile ride the next morning. The trails were well maintained and well marked.
We rode to this pretty little pond with a view of the San Francisco Peaks, which still had some snow at the top.
The guys went golfing while Mom and I rode, then we met back up for lunch. Matthew's Aunt Margaret and cousin Dennis also drove up to visit with us while we were nearby (I forgot to take any photos!) and brought a picnic lunch. After our guests left we drove to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument for a hike. We started out at the visitor's center where we had fun making waves on the seismograph!
Then we hiked up and around an old crater called Lenox Crater.
Finally, we hiked through some lava flows and to the base of Sunset Crater. The lava flows looked as if someone had rototilled the rocks!
Sunset Crater, which erupted about 1,000 years ago.
After our busy one day in Arizona we packed up and headed off to our next stop. The drive was beautiful along the way and some of the roads were a little steep.
